Do you need a Party Wall Notice?
A party wall notice is a formal written notice that a property owner gives to a neighbour when they plan to do building work that might affect a shared wall, structure, or boundary.
You must serve a party wall notice if you’re planning:
Work on a shared wall (a “party wall”) between terraced or semi-detached houses.
Building up to the boundary line (for example, building an extension or loft conversion).
Excavating near a neighbour’s property (e.g., digging foundations within 3 or 6 metres depending on depth).
The notice includes:
Your name and address.
A clear description of the work.
When you plan to start.
You must give your neighbor:
2 months’ notice before work begins for most structural work.
1 month’s notice for smaller works like excavation.
